Wrhatnala USA is the sister ensemble of Sanggar Wrhatnala of Bali, Indonesia, to which more than ten gamelan troupes from the neighborhood associations (banjar) have chosen to join. Sanggar Wrhatnala of Bali has toured Europe in the 1980s. Both troupes were founded by the late I Gusti Agung Ngurah Supartha SST, who is born in the royal Court of Puri Agung Buluh Kenana and a prominent Balinese dancer, puppeteer, internationally known composer and choreographer. He is also internationally known as an indefatigable protagonist and teacher of Indonesian dance and music. His last legacy was directing the Kecak Dance Colossal with over 6000 Kecak Dancers in Bali **Video clip**. Gamelan Wrhatnala Blue Ridge is the other sister ensemble of Sanggar Wrhatnala of Bali, Indonesia. Gamelan Wrhatnala Blue Ridge was founded by Dr. Laura Renninger in 2002. Wrhatnala USA is directed by I Gusti Agung Pratimawan Supartha. Pratimawan also directing Gamelan Wrhatnala Blue Ridge at Shepherd University West Virginia . The assistant director of Wrhatnala USA is Richard Hopkins. I Gusti Agung Jenggala Supartha is directing the Sanggar Wrhatnala of Bali, .Indonesia. Both director are son's of I Gusti Agung Ngurah Supartha SST. Wrhatnala USA has made trips to different cities in he United States, giving lectures, workshops, and performances at universities (Massachusetts, Ohio, Shepherd, Cornell, Towson, Princeton, Georgetown, Washington and Lee University, Salisbury State, George Washington, George Mason, Mary Mount, University of the South (Tennessee), University of Richmond, University of Evansville (Indiana), Trinity College, etc.). It has performed in different programs, i.e.: Indonesian nights (Minnesota, New York, etc.), Asian art festivals (Florida, Ohio, etc.), fund raising at the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida, National Rehabilitation Hospital at the newly built Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC, Longvue Gardens in New Orleans, and United Nations program in the Bahamas. In the Washington, DC area it has performed in programs at the Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, in local parks, schools, and community associations. It has also participated in a county cable television program in Maryland. Wrhatnala USA troupe is composed of elegant and exquisitely costumed dancers, and musicians playing the gamelan instruments, consisting of met allophones, drums, gongs, flutes, and cymbals. Workshop programs introducing different gamelan styles and dance forms, performances, lectures, as well as wayang (shadow puppets) plays, have been developed to serve various audiences and venues |
